In April of 2014, New York State teachers were introduced to the revised state curriculum for social studies, commonly known as "the framework". This document is the first major overhaul of the social studies standards in decades and will pave the way for changes in Regent's exams at the high school level beginning with a Transition Regent's Exam in June of 2018.
With a focus on inquiry and skill-based instruction, social studies instruction will now feature 5 basic "shifts" in delivery:
1. Craft questions that spark and sustain an inquiry;
2. Cultivate and nurture collaborative civic spaces;
3. Integrate content and skills purposefully;
4.Promote literary practices and outcomes;
5. Provide tangible opportunities for taking informed action.
